POETRY
EMOTIONS of
POETRY.
THE ROLE of
EMOTION.
The
role of emotions: Consists in the reaction of the mind-body combination to the
objects or situations that sense images make it aware of.
Emotion, like imagery, is
conditioned by our physiological history.
Archetypal image : Are the images that we can moved by them because of their significance
for us throughout our history. Are those patternings whose unconscious charge
can stir and disturb us. Birth, love, guilt, death, rebirth.
Emotional experience: The poet, unlike the philosopher, is not primarily a thinker. “the poet
who thinks;” T.S. Eliot reminds us, “is merely the poet who can express the
emotional equivalent of thought”. A complete poem is one where an emotion has
found its thought and the thought has found the words.
Sense and Sentimentality :
It is through the image that poetry can best convey
emotion either through the image of the object that arouses it, or through the
image of its physical effect. Through the poetry we can express feelings not
only directly but also indirectly, for instance through the colors, objects,
symbols.
Sentiment itself is an opinion colored by feeling.
ü Apathy and despair can be
sentimental.
ü Love can be sentimental.
*Emotion
is healthy when it is of the kind and in the amount that its object deserves.*
Sentimental poetry demands
that we feel without thinking.
In Poetry colors represent a feeling for
example:
Green = jealousy,
rebirth, money
Pink = happiness
Brown
= earthly qualities
Orange = curiosity, wisdom
Gray = depression, defeat, monotony,
boredom
Gold - happiness
Red = anger,
danger, war, seduction, passion
Black = sorrow or death
White = purity but also death
Blue= sadness
Example of a Blue Poem:
PAIN
She cried like any one of us would in her
situation. She cried hard. Her
face was squeezed red. Her mouth pulled in. Her
eyes were the size of a
pinhead, but they were red and teary. You might be
trying to imagine her,
but you already know what she looks like. We all
have looked like her. Yes,
we have. She cried, she cried, she cried. She'll
forever be crying,
shell never stop. Never. Never. Why? Why? Why? How
should I or you know?
Who? Who? Who is she? I don't know. But she is no
one. An oblivion. Who is
she?
